WEST, TEXAS NEWS 5/6/10

Lots and lots of action in West for the next couple of weeks..Local city and school elections are Saturday. I will vote for Tommy Muska for sure. I'm still up in the air about the other two. I think C.W. Cernosek is a horses ass so I'm sure I won't be voting for him.
Tractors of all shapes and sizes are going to be participating in the Saturday's Tractor and Truck pull, which is sponsored by the West Volunteer Fire Department at the Westfest track. I must be more of a city girl than I thought as the idea of watching a tractor pull puts me to sleep.zzzz
Only in West,Texas. We are having a Spring Fling which will combine a garage sale and an outdoor movie. The West Chamber of Commerce's first-ever city-wide garage sale and family movie night. It's scheduled for May 15 on the property next to the Czech Inn. The event will include a garage sale from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. and a free outdoor family night beginning around dark.
David Pareya said that 25 individual booths for the even have already been rented and 11 commercial vendor spots have also been rented. (I think the Library is having their annual book sale there too.) The chamber is also planning a free outdoor movie, courtesy of Associated Concrete Contractors of West for that night beginning at dark and is to be shown on a giant 30 foot by 40 foot screen. Plans are to show the Disney movie UP. There will be a food booth with full concessions throughout the day. The food is to include hot dogs, sausage wraps, nachos, fried ice cream(this is Texas, you know there had to be something fried.) and of course, ice cream. Soft drinks will also be available. "It will be just like a real night out at the movies. Just bring your lawn chairs and blankets," Pareya said. There will be no admission charge for the movie and there is also free parking, restroom facilities and the event will be wheelchair accessible.
I really think this is cool. I love that they are doing it and hope it will be a regular thing. Not so much the garage sale but the outdoor movie. I love the idea of outdoor movies, and makes me remember all the drive in movies I went to as a kid and all of the ones I took my kids to. Good times.
Plus the West Main Street's first-ever Mayfest celebration in the city is scheduled to highlight arts and craft, music and food in the city's downtown area on May 21 and 22. Spivey Crossing will kick-off the event from 7-9 p.m. May 21 and they will perform in the second floor of the Nors Sausage and Burger House.(old spittoon cafe). A full day of activities is planned for May22.
There are 21 vendors so far and they will be selling items as handmade lace, pottery, stained glass, handmade jewelry, painted feathers, rainwater collection jars, metal art, fire-fighting gear, oil paintings of historic West buildings, tractor art, scrap booking items, cooking bags, tote bags, handmade quilts, western and scenic photography and sky lights.
The Fall Creek Vineyard from Tow, Texas, the Texas Legato Winery from Lampasas and the Chisolm Trail Winery will be represented for a wine tasting event and sales. Chuck Wagon cooking is also to be on display at the even, courtesy of sponsor West Feeds, on Mayfest Saturday. The Wishbone Wagon will be selling authentic chuck wagon food and giving demonstrations during the day. "All the proceeds from this will go to Main Street," Susie Price said.
Along with the Chuck Wagon food, restaurants in the area will be open to help provide food for those coming to Mayfest. Downtown merchants are also to be open for the event and Main Street is asking residents to try to keep their businesses open during the afternoon on May 23.
A young fiddlers exhibition is planned from 4-5 p.m. on a state in the downtown area. An open mike period with Mike Edwards and the '56 Chevy Band is planned from 6-8 and the Ryan Roberts Band is to perform at 8 p.m. A Cowboy Bean Cooking competition is also planned and the price of entry is $10 and those wishing to enter are asked to contact Price at 826-5566. The beans are to be cooked at home and brought to the even for 1 p.m. judging.Plaques are to be presented to the three top winners.(hm,I might enter my Julio Beans)
In addition on May 23, Bill Hearne and his Trio will be performing Texas Swing and Austin country-type music from 6-9 p.m. in the Nors Sausage and Burger House.

I gotta tell ya -- the Spring Fling and the Mayfest sound kinda fun! But I'd pass on the tractor pull too, unless it was a nice day and nothing was on TV.

Your tractors must be pretty sissy if you could sleep through them. Around here the noise is ear splitting. Other than that they are totally boring.

I never heard of a tractor pull until I moved from the farm to the city. If the tractors were real working ones, I'd go for it. As I recall original tractor pulls were between a team of work horses and an early John Deer model.

Out door movies reminds me of when I was living in tent city every fall in the late 70s where I was busy playing war with the tactical computer systems I was helping develop (there were no home computers then an Windows was a nightmare far in the future). We also had beer tents!

A guy from my old work place who was 6'4" and at least 300 pounds spends his off time rebuilding Cub Cadet riding lawn mowers and competing in tractor pulls with them. He kinda looks like that giant fat guy riding the tiny mini bike I see pictures of on the internet. I don't think he's ever won.
Sounds like lots of fun in West this May.

I loooove outdoor movies and some of my best kid memories are of going to the drive-in. The movie has to be something easy to follow though... lots of distractions around.

I also remember the days of drive in movies! *sigh*

We have tractor pulls in these parts too, but I'd never be caught dead at one.

Well, okay, that makes more tractor pullin' for me!

Hope you got out to the sale and saw the movie.
