We =already= know. They =were= banned, for 10 full years. We simply had no politicians left with any spine to stand up to the NRA when it expired. And in the almost-15-years since, we've seen the result of unfettered access to these weapons, over and over and over and over again.
The ONLY substantive difference between what a soldier carries into combat and what the gun shop sells hand-over-fist today is that the 'civilian' variant cannot have burst-fire or full-auto fire options installed. And "enterprising" individuals and corporations have found myriad ways around that little inconvenience, as so horribly demonstrated by Stephen Paddock. Even WITHOUT the ability to fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger, Nikolas Cruz slaughtered 17 ex-fellow students, and wounded Dog-knows-how-many more, simply by having and using multiple hi-cap magazines.
We KNOW what needs to be done. The spineless NRA-owned GOP bastards in Congress know it. They simply refuse to, because Wayne Lapierre has their testicles in a jar out in the backyard somewhere.
