  2. true story

An unconsionable number of years ago I set off on a cross-country road trip from AZ to MA to visit a friend in Boston. He snet me a letter with detailed directions to get from a specific exit on the Mass Pike to his place, but all the directions were "go to the first like and turn right, then at the second stop sign turn left..."

(kids, this was in the mythical times Before Cellphones and Google Maps.Heck it was in the years BI: Before the Internet)

The cross country trip was a leisurely affair, took about a month, since many friends were being visited. When I finally arrived in Boston I carefully followed his directions, and ended up...somewhere NOT his place. I found a pay phone and called him. I was literally on the other side of Boston metro area from him; apparently between the time he sent me the directions and my arrival, a single new stop sign had been placed along my route, causing me to be miles off course.

  3. Yes, it still is a fairy tale. A correct tale, but still a fairy tale.

  4. Boston does have a rectilinear bit, on what was once wetlands that were filled in in the 19th century. But then again, I once had to find a place at the corner of batterymarch and batterymarch (No street or ave).

By the same token, there is lower Manhattan, where they employed the same turban planners (aka: livestock) that Boston did. And in Greenwich village, you can stand at the corner of St. James and St. James.

Manhattan did have a bit of help, it was fairly flat, Boston was a pretty skinny peninsula, of tall hills surrounded by tidal mudflats.

  5. Jackiesue, I’d be more forgiving if I could sleep more than 4 hours a night. Sleep envy! You do seem to be in an ornery frame of mind…

Acyrologia and “Are you still seeing that cute cross eyed girl?”
I must say Paul “with the marvelous pelt” Stanley’s remarks are surprising. My guy Kieth says it like it is.
Thanks, YDG, oh, never mind, you’re probably back asleep already 😉
