35TH WESTFEST IN WEST, TEXAS

Here it is again ....Westfest...35th Anniversary. How many of these have you celebrated with me..6? Wow..You guys should know as much about Westfest as the people that actually go to them.

The events for Westfest on Friday are the gates open at 5:30 p.m. at at 6 p.m The Scott Shelby Band plays till 7p.m. when they have the Miss Westfest Pageant in the East Pavilion.
At 8 p.m. Gary P. Nunn plays in the East Pavilion until 10p.m. and then Josh Abbot plays till closing at midnight.
Saturday at 8a.m. the have the registration for the Taroky Tourney at the Community Center(which is over by the Library and down the road from me)
10 a.m. is the Westfest parade and in case I forgot to mention it, our parade is the largest parade per capita of any city in the Nation.(maybe Texas, but fuckit I say the entire Unites States of 'merica)
11a.m. the gates open and let the pevo flow.
at noon they have the opening ceremony and the Antique Tractor Pull Starts.
3 p.m. the Washer Pitching Tourney starts at the Rodeo Arena.
6 p.m. the Horseshoe Pitching Tourney starts at the Rodeo Arena. and let me tell you..we have some serious folks entering the Tourney. Last year there were 142 teams. I think the Dulocks have won it damn near every year. Dennis Dulock who is my x-daughter-in-law's cousin won it last year and he's lethal. My cousins and Thom played one year thinking they were pretty good. They got their asses handed to them on a plate.Kinfolk kinfolk, everyone's kinfolk.
7:30p.m. they have Karaoke, which is beginning to be more popular all the time. All the 'joints' around West have a Karaoke night. I have them marked down on my calendar so I'll make sure not to go.
Sunday starts out with the Kolache 5,000 Challenge starts at 8 a.m. At 10:15 a.m. they have the Polka Mass(officiated by Father Straten.
1 p.m. is the Kolache Baking Contest judging at the West Community Center.
6 p.m. Horseshoe Pitching Tourney and 7 p.m. more Karaoke.

Brave Combo will be celebrating their 31st anniversary. I always thought they had been here from day one, but ...I was wrong. Some more entertainment? 56 Chevy Band, Mikula Orchestra, The Walberg Boys, Fritz Hodde, Das 1st Lustig, The Harvesters, The Holub Polka Band, Czech and Then Some, Vaneks of West, Sincerely Elvis(what's a Westfest with out an Elvis impersonator?) James L. Wages and the Praha Brothers.
Want to learn a little Czech? Welcome to Westfest...Vitame Vas Na Westfest.
How are you?....Jak se mas?

The Westfest Arts and Crafts grows every year. From stained glass, jewelry, wind chimes, wood worked items, metal work, tin work, handmade boots, belts, bird feeders, novely items, t-shirts, candles, wooden toys, handmade clothes, etc. Just a shit load of stuff...but now..to the good stuff.

THE FOOD AND DRINKS
Of course we start out with beer and Dr. Pepper products. Pretzels, sloppy joes, soft serve ice cream, tea, baked potatoes with all the fixings, corn dogs, french fries, skunk eggs(sold by the Chamber of Commerce), raspberry lemonade, sausage sandwiches, sausage kolaches, sausage, potatoes and kraut plate, with home made beer bread. Bold Springs Baptist Church (hot dang) will have hamburger, cheeseburgers, french fries and tea.
Nachos, tamales, tacos, chalupas, burritos, catfish, shrimp, chicken strip baskets, sausage on a stick,
snow cones, cotton candy,BBQ sandwiches, roasted corn, steak on a stick, chicken on a stick (and my favorite) Pork k-b0b, ribeye steaks, Red Bull, turkey legs, hot dogs, beer bread sausage sandwiches, with pickles, funnel cakes, rosettes and frito pies, coke products, kettle corn, pork rinds, pecan, almonds, cashews and fresh fruit drinks, fried potato twisters, fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, fried squash, ice cream floats, strudels, beef fajitas, chicken fajitas, tostadas and breakfast burritos. Damn...I'm hungry. I can't even begin to tell you the wonderful aromas that waft down the Westfest grounds. It is unbelievable. There is NO way you can walk through there and not get something to eat. sigh*...I live about 1/2 of a tenth of a mile from the grounds and you can smell it at the apts.
I'm taking the camera and the video and hopefully will be able to figure out how to download it to the computer so I can put it on the blog.
well..have to run..Have to go round Dexter up ...make sure he doesn't bring in any live mice. Woke up this morning to a hall way of spinning gecko tails. No gecko's just their tails. Pretty freaky.
Pevo for my friends....

Hear ye...hear ye:
More towns should have this kind of event.
We have Yankee Doodle weekend, but it pales in comparison to the way West lives it up.
Oh that's right...everything is bigger in TX . :0)

Times like this almost make me wish I never divorced the Czech from West.
Hey..I said ALMOST!
Dammit! I wanna wrap my false teeth around a............... kolache.

I didn't see fried butter on the list.
I was eating when I read this. Now my chicken patty sandwiches seem like breaded cardboard with cheese. Thought I was being smart eating when I read it.
they always end our county fair with a demolition derby. I guess there not as destructive down there.
I was going to ask what the hell a Taroky Tourney was but decided to search it first so I wouldn't look too dumb. Now I know and Yellowdog Granny was on the first page of Google. Not gonna tell anyone else what it is. Let them look it up for themselves.
