My wife had a theory that cats are spies from the cat planet, the advance guard of their takeover. They have scanners built into their stomachs, when they flop onto what you are reading, its to scan it and transmit it back to the planet for analysis. (and when they disappear for a few hours than re-appear, they used a teleport booth in the closes to return home to report).
Both the footprints, and the tale of the red dot, had me laughing out loud. Wish she was still around to show them to.
